Product Description

#1 New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn returns with yet another explosive thriller, introducing the young Mitch Rapp, as he takes on his first assignment. Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist’s worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world . . . and then tragedy struck.
Two decades of cutthroat, partisan politics has left the CIA and the country in an increasingly vulnerable position. Cold War veteran and CIA Operations Director Thomas Stansfield knows he must prepare his people for the next war. The rise of Islamic terrorism is coming, and it needs to be met abroad before it reaches America’s shores. Stansfield directs his protÉgÉe, Irene Kennedy, and his old Cold War colleague, Stan Hurley, to form a new group of clandestine operatives who will work outside the normal chain of command—men who do not exist.
What type of man is willing to kill for his country without putting on a uniform? Kennedy finds him in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.
Six months of intense training has prepared him to bring the war to the enemy’s doorstep, and he does so with brutal efficiency. Rapp starts in Istanbul, where he assassinates the Turkish arms dealer who sold the explosives used in the Pan Am attack. Rapp then moves onto Hamburg with his team and across Europe, leaving a trail of bodies. All roads lead to Beirut, though, and what Rapp doesn’t know is that the enemy is aware of his existence and has prepared a trap. The hunter is about to become the hunted, and Rapp will need every ounce of skill and cunning if he is to survive the war-ravaged city and its various terrorist factions.
As action-packed, fast-paced, and brutally realistic as it gets, Flynn’s latest page-turner shows readers how it all began. Behind the steely gaze of the nation’s ultimate hero is a young man primed to become an American Assassin.

"A Mediocrity at Best" 2010-10-30
By Howard N Singer (Bangkok, Thailand)

Vince Flynn's new best seller, "American Assassin," is a very poor book. The first 25% of the book is an unbelievable and stupid description of efforts to train CIA agents. It is, frankly, dispiriting that any author would think his or her readers so gullible as to believe that what is described here could actually exist, or be successful. It takes navy seals training to a new level and introduces Stan Hurley, the lead CIA trainer, who behaves so stupidly that he could not exist in any organization for more than a few hours. His relationship to other characters in the CIA is juvenile. After the story moves to the Middle East and Europe, the plot does pick up, but it's so routine and hackneyed, that it's only mildly interesting. The main event of the novel, the breaking into of a computer network, probably an impossibility, is never explained; the author just mentions that the CIA was able to do it. Contrast this with the meticulous and exciting detailing of a similar intelligence operation in "The Rembrandt Affair" by Daniel Silva. Details are not important to Flynn as, at one point, he places Beirut on the ocean. His cartoonish characters would probably not know the difference. I don't know if I was more annoyed at the author for writing this mediocrity, or at my fellow reviewers who raved about the book, or at myself for actually reading the entire book. We're all losers as far as I'm concerned.

American Assassin: A Thriller
Reviewed by Tracy L. Karol

After the last Flynn novel, I wondered where he would take us on our journey with Mitch Rapp. Our hero has weathered devastating heartbreak, betrayals, corrupt (and/or stupid politicians), more danger than any James Bond character, and has barely managed to keep his soul intact. I find it a great testament to Mr. Flynn's writing and creativity that he has penned a character who has evolved so much. Yet there was always something missing. We knew from previous books that Rapp had been recruited to join the CIA, but his early years with the agency remained a mystery. In fact, just before I started reading this book someone who wanted to start the series asked me if he needed to start at the beginning or if he could pick up anywhere and understand the books. I hesitated to answer, but after reading "American Assassin" I can fully endorse starting with the latest release.

Obviously Flynn gives enough background material in each book that a new reader can enjoy the novel, but I'm personally glad that I actually read "Term Limits" years ago when it was first released, then read the rest of the books as they were published. Yes, it was agony waiting for each to come out, but they were all well worth the wait. That said, "American Assassin" is one book that anyone can actually start reading now and then go back and read the other books in the series ("Term Limits" is probably optional, but still a great read). It goes back in time and describes a young Mitch Rapp, just graduated from college, recruited by Dr. Irene Kennedy to join a super-secret black ops program to fight terrorism.

Not only was the book fascinating, it was wonderful to take a peek at the lives of other major characters in the series, some who are no longer around. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I quickly read "Transfer of Power" again and am now reading "The Third Option." So I would say if you've never read Vince Flynn but have wanted to try out his series, "American Assassin" is a great place to start. While it's the latest book, it goes back in time so you don't miss anything from the later books, and if you love a good thriller, you'll have a plethora waiting for you to read once you finish it. And trust me, Flynn knows of what he writes. When I check out the copyright date on these older novels, it's clear that Flynn had a firm grasp on the threat our country was facing from Islamic extremists, prior to 9/11. He has been spot-on ever since. I highly recommend all of his novels, not only for their entertainment value, but because they are actually educational as well.

A few times I have been lucky enough to stumble upon an author who has already produced a body of work that is fantastic, and after reading one novel I tear through all the other published titles (this happened with Robert Crais and Nelson DeMille). If you haven't started reading Flynn, this is your chance. I'm now on my third go-round with some of these books; that's how much I enjoy them.

Happy reading!

"2nd grade reading" 2010-10-30
By Neal
I've never given up on a book in the first chapter before but this felt like 2nd grade character and plot development. I'm returning the book tomorrow. It's frustrating because I love action books and was expecting good things.

"Time to close the book on Rapp" 2010-10-30
By T. Howlin (Virginia)
If this book was actually written, in its entirety, by Flynn, I'd be very surprised. There are abrupt shifts in writing style throughout the book that makes me think it was submitted unfinished and closed up by a ghost writer or that is was co-written with someone else for some reason. In any case, I found the book boring with little suspense. I think that perhaps this particular series has run its course and it's time for Flynn to seek a new direction. It even seems like Flynn himself may be tired of the character and the plot lines and needs to flex his creative muscles into a different direction - same genre, just a different approach.

If you haven't already bought the book, get on the waiting list at the library and save yourself the cost of the book.

"Starting Over" 2010-10-30
By Deborah Atherton (New York, NY United States)
It's been a very long time since I bought my last issue of Superman but I was riveted by the cover of this truly amazing graphic novel and the contents do not disappoint. This retelling of the myth we all know so well speaks to our era of failing newspapers, disappointing scientific progress, leaders who fail to lead, and a military trying heroically to cope with a situation that lies far, far out of their area of expertise. And it does all this while evoking a Metropolis where prosperity lies in the hands of a privileged few and the rest of the populace is hanging on in cafes and bars drinking cocktails and contemplating a somewhat dim future. J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis have some of the advantages of ancient Greek playwrights in telling their story--we all know how it comes out, so they can take a little time, despite the very condensed format of the graphic novel, to really give us subtleties and complexities of character and scene. The story is beautifully drawn and inked, using a muted 21st century palette. It's a brilliant re-thinking and re-imagining of the Superman story, introducing some moral complexity and ambiguity without losing the optimism and inspiration of the original. And it can't just be me who is thinking that they've already got some unbeatable storyboards for a movie.

"Fantastic Superman story" 2010-10-30
By Dylan Luciano (USA)
Despite the popularity and iconic nature of Superman, he has always been criticized by the general public as being way too powerful, not having enough faults, being boring etc. I thought of Superman like this for awhile myself until I read John Byrne's Superman reboot and realized I was completely wrong about him. This book seems to do the same thing only it also manages to put Superman in a modern day setting. Superman is cleverly written as not only being a different character from the original but also having faults without being self loathing and whiny (contrary to what some others have said)

In fact the only real complaint that I have with this book is how silly the main villain looks. Alien beings have certainly looked worse (Like in old B movies when they are wrapped in tin foil) but he makes me laugh just by his appearance. I also have the minor nitpick of Lex Luthor not appearing. If only because he is usually mentioned or shown in Superman's various origins.

The creative team behind this book is fantastic with J. Michael Straczynski's strong writing and Shane Davis unique artwork. (The cover itself is enough incentive for me to want to pick up the book)

"A new take on the origin of Superman" 2010-10-29
By Enrique Trevino (Cd. Juarez, Mexico)
Straczyinski is an author I like a lot. He wrote the great TV series Babylon 5, he wrote some really good Spider-man comics and he wrote one of my favorite comics "Midnight Nation". When I found out his favorite superhero was Superman and that he would write a graphic novel about him, I got excited. Before reading this book, I noticed that it was getting poor reviews online (4.5/10 on IGN and 2/5 in CBR) so my expectations lowered after noticing that.

Overall, I thought the book was pretty good. It had a beginning, a middle and an end. It had good art, it had nice moments and it was mostly well done. I liked that the book considers that the US would look for the meteor when it arrived on Earth, I liked that Clark Kent considers many jobs before taking journalism and that there's an actual reason for him doing that. I like that wearing that uniform felt silly for a teenager, but he did for his parents. I even liked the villain in the book, mainly because I don't think of the villain as just that one character, but the whole backstory with the destruction of Krypton.

However, I do have some problems with the book. In the beginning when Clark goes on trials for a professional football team, they say they put him as left tackle, however the actual sequence of drawings suggests that he was a defensive end. I have a problem with this, because it should be easy to check on wikipedia what the position is for the person drawing it. Another problem I have is when Clark writes some equations to "solve" a really advanced problem for some chemists that have been working on it for three years. The equation looks like something a third grader could write. It would have been nice to see an advanced equation or even gibberish would be better. It just looked silly.

Obviously, those problems are minor, but I think that attention to detail is the sort of thing that separates good books from great books.

I think the comic is worth reading, specially if you're new to the character. A great book to get new audiences to try out superheros.

"Not "emo" or "Twilight"-esque" 2010-10-28
By W. Gullige (Orlando, FL)
This story starts right as Clark is settling in to a small apartment in Metropolis. Jonathan Kent has just died and Clark has graduated from a junior college and is trying to find a so he can take care of his mother. He is about 20 at this point. He isn't "emo" and the overall story really has nothing in common with "Twilight." DC (more specifically, Dan DiDio) said those things to boost sales. Salesmen often lie about their product in order to sell it. Even when they don't need to.

The story stays true to the traditional continuity in many ways. They cover how the Kents found Clark, where the suit and name came from and all of that. At a core level, neither the character or the overall story have really changed. Some things 'are' different though, and those are really interesting.

The fate of Krypton has changed somewhat. The end result is the same in that it blows up, but the reason why is different. It makes a lot of sense though. That is the case with most of the changes made to the traditional Superman continuity. More sense has been made of it.

Now, there are things in this story that made me wonder if Straczynski has simply run out of ideas. For example: Superman is fighting a villain near the end of the story. It is arguably the most important struggle in the whole comic and they stop it dead for a villain monologue. That is almost forgivable though. It's the way the author tries to excuse it that drives me nuts. Between that and the constant flashbacks, the story gets really slow at times. This is why I only gave it four stars. There was some exposition that almost made me drop it to three, but I loved the art.

The art is just great. The standout piece, I think, is the redesign of the iconic suit. It stays true to the classic design while giving it a really nice modern look that I could definitely see in a future Superman movie.

As a side note, I think what qualifies as a 'good' Superman story depends on the Superman you grew up with. My earliest recollection of Superman is the Superboy TV show. From there, I've always watched or read something "Superman" in some form all my life, and he is updated often to keep his relevance, so I'm used to the changes. A casual fan or someone who has based their entire fandom of Superman on the 90s cartoon or on the Donner movies may have some trouble getting into this comic. I would venture to say that this is where some of the negative critique is coming from. More accurately, I would venture to say that a lot of websites are posting reviews without actually reading the comic (cough *ign* cough). Don't listen to them, listen to actual fans.

The comic is very good all around and is a really decent price on Amazon right now, so I would say get it while the gettin' is good. I would also recommended "All-star Superman vol. 1 & 2."

4 stars out of 5. Bring on "Batman: Earth One"!

"Great new take on an icon." 2010-10-28
By BigRobot
Everyone know Supes' origin. He's a icon. Hundreds of writers and artists have had their piece to add to the mythos. However, nobody writes Superman like J. Michael Straczynski, and Shane Davis' art is nothing short of amazing.

Now, this isn't necessarily the Superman that you're used to. This isn't the Superman who faces apocalyptic dangers with a silent, confident smile before wading into the fray and confronts New Gods before breakfast. Really, it's more about the man than the "super". This is about a Clark Kent who isn't sure about his place in the world, who is an outsider looking in. This is you, or me, or anyone who's gone out on their own for the first time and tried to make something of themselves, unsure and alone.

Superman: Earth One is an amazing coming of age story, a story about finding oneself, and standing up in the face of adversity, even if it's the last thing that you want to do. It's about doing the right thing, even if you have other options. It's quintessential Superman.

Product Description

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t mind her tongue, so she’s lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don’t.

"I am disappointed at this book" 2010-10-30
By A Zhu (Irvine, CA United States)
I started this book, well, because the rating had been so high. The more I read, the more confused I got. Why do other people like it so much? Even after reading all those good reviews, I still don't get it. Its story is about an old topic. People nowadays can hardly relate to it. The characters are too black or white, either good or bad, no depth.

Enjoyed this book very much. Laughed in many parts of comments by the characters, heart warming relationships, and sad that segregation was a part of our history.

"Great book!" 2010-10-28
By J. Zahn (Pascoag, RI United States)
It took me a while to get to this book but I was so glad I did. It was such an interesting read that I breezed right through it but I didn't want it to end! Stockett's writing style is supberb, using many "voices" for her story. It makes you appreciate and understand what people went through during that era. I certainly will be looking for more of her books.

1 hour 15 minutes Yield
Serves 12 Ingredients for Filling
  • 4 large Golden Delicious or Gala apples (about 3 pounds)
  • 1/2 cup butternut squash puree
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • Juice of 1 lemon (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Ingredients for Topping
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, pecans, or almonds, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 1-1/4 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4 inch slices. In a large mixing bowl, toss the apples, squash puree, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, and vanilla. Transfer to the dish and spread out in an even layer. Set aside.

3. Top the apples evenly with the nut mixture and bake, uncovered, until the apples are bubbly and the topping is golden brown, about 45 to 50 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

"Falsely Advertised on Oprah" 2010-10-30
By BW (U.S.)
I completely agree with other reviewers that are disappointed in the recipes in this book. When she was on Oprah she made great, easy looking dishes that had veggies in them, but had nothing to do with purees. I thought this cookbook would have included those recipes and other similar recipes. I don't mind using purees sometimes, but I didn't want a whole book full of recipes with them in it, and was not aware that this book is just like her first "Deceptively Delicious".

I feel as though this book was falsely advertised to viewers because NONE of the recipes she made on the show are included here. Who would have guessed that? If you're on Oprah talking about your new book, why not highlight some of the recipes that are in the book? Maybe she (and the producers) knew that recipes with purees wouldn't appeal to everyone. I would not have bought this knowing what I do now. I could have just gotten the recipes I wanted, for free, online.

"Double Deception" 2010-10-30
By M. Robins
How many more times is this disingenuous social climber going to appear on Oprah trying to dupe the public into thinking that she is just another "busy mom" like many of the hardworking honest viewers? If you want an excellent way to roast chicken follow any number of other chefs (Ina Garten, Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay and even Martha Stewart for heaven sakes).

Did you ever think that you would see Jerry Seinfeld reduced to sitting in an Oprah studio audience kvelling over crock pot lasagna? It is beyond pathetic. A better use of time would be to help hungry children overseas. I am shocked that Oprah would subscribe to such nonsense - but then again maybe she is gunning for another round of Louboutin shoes.

This book and the whole concept of recycling ideas which have been around for decades is the real crock. Save your money and please give it to a worthy cause. This Jessica Seinfeld is the last person on earth who needs more money to fund her narcisstic needs. I am doubled over with disgust.

"Simply healthy" 2010-10-29
By wogan (U.S.A.)
This is a spiral bound cookbook that has as its goal less fat and more healthy cooking. Jessica Seinfield shows you how to shop for better well being, how to read labels and her hints for picking out more wholesome choices in fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat, poultry, fish, oils, breads and cereals, pasta, rice, beans and grains, juices and sodas, snacks. In my book the spiral binding is very tight and especially for the first 25 and last 25 pages, they tear even as I tried to carefully flatten them.

The recipes are: breakfast, mealtime, dessert.

An example of how she makes her food better for you is in some of the ingredients for her cinnamon buns: nonfat milk, orange juice, whole wheat flour, non fat milk powder, carrot puree, trans fat free margarine, cauliflower puree. If you have very sensitive taste buds, you can taste these purees and sometimes the different texture they result in. I counted 66 various recipes with the following purees: broccoli, sweet potato, carrot, cauliflower, pumpkin, spinach, butternut squash,, yellow squash and 16 with no purees used- so this seems to be one of the keys to this healthful cooking. In all honesty my family prefers regular recipes and has voted unanimously to eat less rather than to use the pureed vegetable ingredients.

"Purees, purees, purees...." 2010-10-29
By Ruth N. Alten (cape cod)
I'm sorry, there is NOTHING quick about these recipes. Almost all of them call for pureed cauliflower, broccoli, butternut squash, yellow squash, etc. Waaaaayyyyy too much work!

"Dissapointed" 2010-10-27
By J. patri (Woodland Hills, CAUnited States)
I saw Jessica on Oprah and thought the book would be great. I bought it to discover the 3 recipies that she showed on Oprah are NOT in the book.

What happened to the Crock Pot Lasangna, the steak, asparagus dinner and the Whole Roasted Chicken? She never mentioned the use of Purees in the recipies. None of this seems fast with the use of the vegetable purees. I am not saying it is a bad cookbook, it was represented as something else.

Amazon Exclusive: John Irving Reviews Cutting for Stone

John Irving has been nominated for a National Book Award three times--winning once, in 1980, for the novel The World According to Garp. In 1992, Irving was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 2000, he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Cider House Rules--a film with seven Academy Award nominations. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of Cutting for Stone:

That Abraham Verghese is a doctor and a writer is already established; the miracle of this novel is how organically the two are entwined. I’ve not read a novel wherein medicine, the practice of it, is made as germane to the storytelling process, to the overall narrative, as the author manages to make it happen here. The medical detail is stunning, but it never overwhelms the humane and narrative aspects of this moving and ambitious novel. This is a first-person narration where the first-person voice appears to disappear, but never entirely; only in the beginning are we aware that the voice addressing us is speaking from the womb! And what terrific characters--even the most minor players are given a full history. There is also a sense of great foreboding; by the midpoint of the story, one dreads what will further befall these characters. The foreshadowing is present in the chapter titles, too--‘The School of Suffering’ not least among them! Cutting for Stone is a remarkable achievement.--John Irving

"Yawn... Snore..." 2010-10-29
By Amanda Matti (Ohio)
I have no idea how this book got such rave reviews. My only guess is people figured that since it's so long and boring it simply MUST be a masterpiece. Or perhaps since they wasted their time and money on this snorefest they wanted to make sure they weren't alone - misery loves company. I suffered through over 100 pages and still had absolutely no desire to find out 'what happens next'. The characters are like robots the author tries desperately to breath life into with a massive amount of words. All in all, SLOW....BORING...YAWN....SNORE....DROOL.

"Compelling saga but slightly marred by melodramatic ending" 2010-10-27
By Alan A. Elsner (Washington DC)
This novel has enjoyed tremendous success which to a large degree is deserved. It has the sprawling ambition of a real epic. Although the setting is Ethiopia, a country that is brilliantly evoked, for some reason it reminded me of "Gone with the Wind." It has a biblical aspect to it -- the characters are all broadly drawn and their actions often seem to carry epic consequences.

We meet the protagonists early. Sister Mary Joseph Praise, an Indian nun, is sent to Africa to minister to the poor and bring them to Christ. On a terrible sea voyage she meets the socially inept Dr. Thomas Stone, a brilliant surgeon who has no talent for human relations but is a veritable Toscanini with the scalpel. She follows him to Ethiopia where they work as partners for seven years --until she suddenly dies in childbirth. Stone, the presumptive father, flees in confusion leaving two twins to be brought up by a couple of Indian doctors.

The twins are Marion, the narrator, and his brother Shiva, who appears to be some kind of savant able to memorize whole pages just by looking at them, do complex math problems in his head and seduce woman but who lacks human warmth or perhaps a fully human conscience. I must say I found Shiva to be one of the weakest aspects of this novel. He never fully convinced me as a character.

The book is full of riveting descriptions of medical procedures, some not for the squeamish, and memorable descriptions of the city of Addis Abbaba. There is also a doomed love, a few odd martyrdoms, some great deathbed dramas, a couple of revolutions, suppressed sexuality, a great love never properly requited, expected and unexpected encounters and sundry other stuff.

In other words, for much of its length, it's a great read.

To my mind, the book lost its way when the scene changed to America and the last 50 pages were just too melodramatic and manipulative for me. I won't give away the denouement of course, but it left me feeling a little disappointed that such a great novel should fall short of delivering the ending it deserved.

"Stunningly beautiful, completely engrossing, immensely pleasurable read!" 2010-10-27
By A. Shanbhag (Seattle, WA United States)
I loved this book ! I fell in love with all the characters and the moving descriptions of every place and individual. The author's keen understanding and love of humanity, as well as the art and science of doctoring clearly comes through. His storytelling is superb and had me spellbound. Just like his description of the senior dr. Stone's ability where every surgical action was precise, the author's every word and sentence achieves it's purpose of filling our mind and heart with his people. Made me want to enroll in medical school and minister to the world!

Product Description

An international publishing sensation, Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo combines murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue into one satisfyingly complex and entertainingly atmospheric novel.

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month, September 2008: Once you start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there's no turning back. This debut thriller--the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson--is a serious page-turner rivaling the best of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch--and there's always a catch--is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson's novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don't want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo. --Dave Callanan

"unique" 2010-10-30
By Cuisinsky
Finally, a trilogy for twerpy skinny young girls, just the type I dated when I was in the market once upon a time.

I liked this trilogy for thee main reasons. It was a totally unique concept for me to read a book about a troubled young girl, particularly one in another country. Uniqueness is a big draw with me. Second, it was a totally unique story line, once again making it a hit with me. Finally, once I was able to digest the long list of characters in each book, particularly in Tattoo, I was able to power read them all in a variety of settings requiring more or less concentration. The stories hung together well without many puzzling unexplained gaps. I also saw the Tattoo movie and liked it a lot, even though it was not in English.

Too bad Steig died. I can't believe that his bloodsuckers will come up with anything good that was supposedly found on his computer.

"GREAT READ!" 2010-10-30
By Kingsley
After finishing this book I read the one and two star ratings. I suppose that I shouldn't be surprised that some people like to "hear themselves think" but it seems to me that if they hated the book as much as they seem to, they could and should have thrown the damn thing away! Yet strangely they took valuable time to be caustic. One wonders...

Yes, there are some passages that are redundant (like coffee making) and some translation problems, but over all this BOOK IS BRILLIANT, EXCITING, AND VERY VERY READABLE!

I finish by saying that I originally decided to read the book with reservations, I usually do not read novels with this type of hype and promotion. But I did it, and very glad that I did. I will certainly read the next two, and probably be sorry there will be no more.

"Mystery, suspense, intrigue, drama - this book has it all" 2010-10-30
By Julie A. Smith (Cleveland, Ohio United States)
This book is a cross between mystery/suspense/drama. Lisbeth is an unusual sort of private investigator who is originally enlisted by her boss to look up information on Mikael Blomkvist, then just as quickly told that there's no need to continue the investigation. She, however, has her interest piqued and continues the investigation on her own.

Mikael Blomkvist is the part-owner, publisher, and journalist of a respected financial magazine who is apparently fed a false story by an old friend. When he publishes the story, he is sued for libel by the subject of the story .. and loses, which means he will be spending some time in jail. To preserve the reputation of the magazine, he steps down from his post. He receives a mysterious offer (through the same attorney who originally hired Lisbeth's firm to run a background check on HIM [although he doesn't find THIS out until much later]) from a millionaire industrialist (Henrik Vanger) to look into the matter of his granddaughter Harriet's disappearance for a year. The best thing - the industrialist's offer to give him the real dirt on the financial "guru" who sued him for libel when the year is up.

For over 30 years, Henrik has been receiving a yearly 'gift' - a pressed, framed flower - an apparent mockery of the flowers that he used to receive as gifts from his granddaughter prior to her disappearance. The police haven't been able to make any progress into the case, although Morrell, the original detective in charge, has never been able to stop investigating.

That's the bare bones plot. But the novel is so much more.

We start out with a scene of a young girl who is being held captive by someone.

We read in turn about Lisbeth and Mikael. It is a testament to the well-developed characters that as I read about one, I forgot about the other until the narrative came back to them.

There is intrigue, and old stories, and a serial killer, and a sadist or two, and mystery, and incest, and familial rivalry and strife, and a book that makes you want to keep turning pages to see what is going to happen next.

If you haven't read it yet .. READ it. Seriously.

Sensitive reader: There are references to sex, profanity, and violent scenes.

QUOTES:

Then, as she was on the threshold of her teenage years, All The Evil happened, which she did not want to think about. The last outburst set the pattern and prompted a review of the casebook entries from elementary school. After that she was considered to be leaglly . . . well, crazy. A freak. Salander had never needed any documents to know that she was different.

"You see. You've already started to adapt to the submission principle. I hold your life in my hands, Mikael. You know that I can dispatch you at any second. You pleaded with me to improve your quality of life, and you did so by using reason and a little good manners. And you were rewarded."

"The fact is, I've never worked with such a brilliant researcher. OK, I know you're a hacker and hang out in suspect circles in which you can set up an illegal wiretap in London in twenty-four hours, but you get results."

"So-So Read" 2010-10-30
By Ron Hollis (Atlanta, GA)
Ok..I don't read much fiction, but was intrigued by the high ratings and publicity for this book. Spoke to a lady at a bar who raved about the book. Well, I give it 3 stars. it is not all that well written, the story is forced, the technical aspects of hacking (my primary interest) were limited, and the foreign environment (cities, slang, etc) made it a overall mediocre read. if you like good fiction: Jeffrey Archer's Kane and Abel is 5 Stars

Q&A with Dr. Howard Murad

Q: I’ve always heard that I should drink eight glasses of water a day. But in your book you talk about “eating your water.” Why is eating your water better than drinking it?
A: What happens when you drink eight glasses of water a day? You are in the bathroom eight times – or more – flushing your system of vital nutrients. The best source of hydration is the water built into the structure of the foods we eat (structured water) especially raw fruits and vegetables. This form of hydration lasts longer since water is released slowly as you digest and doesn’t merely flush through. That’s why I encourage my patients to replace one glass of water a day with raw fruits or vegetables. Not only will they feel more hydrated, they will be getting more of the vital nutrients they need to build healthy, watertight cells, which are essential to keeping their bodies fully hydrated and operating at their peak.
Q: Will improving my ability to hold cellular water prevent me from developing chronic illnesses and diseases?
A: The Water Secret is not a cure for illness or diseases. Living according to the insights I offer in the book helps to create an Inclusive Health lifestyle that helps you create the optimal environment in your body to help fight illness and disease. At my practice, I see numerous patients who are suffering from a range of diseases in addition to their skin concerns. Many of my patients with cancer have adopted an Inclusive Health lifestyle and attribute their ability to withstand the rigors of chemotherapy to their improvement in overall cellular health. The Water Secret is not a cure but a guide to helping you become as healthy and strong as possible so you can live life to the fullest – no matter what your life may look like and at any age. By adhering to the guidelines presented in The Water Secret, you are aiding every cell in your body by giving them the best environment to thrive and become healthy.
Q: If I have a problem sticking to a diet to lose weight, how is The Water Secret different than a diet?
A: Although weight loss is a common benefit of living inclusively, The Water Secret isn’t a diet – so it really doesn’t create the physical and psychological burden of deprivation that a diet usually creates. To live inclusively, I believe that people should eat what they enjoy but also incorporate healthy raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and other nutritious food and dietary supplements into their daily meal plans. The Water Secret is not limiting; it is about small lifestyle changes that add up to a life transformation. In The Water Secret, I have included recipes and suggestions on how to integrate healthy, delicious foods into your diet to build the strong new cells you need to optimize your overall health.
Q: What is the overall philosophy of The Water Secret?
A: The Water Secret is a paradigm shift in truly understanding the aging process. In the book, I introduce people to a new way of looking at care that I call Inclusive Health® that optimizes the health of the whole person beginning at the cellular level. Inclusive Health accomplishes this through a 3-prong approach that addresses cellular health by focusing on topical, internal and emotional self care. This care is not focused on resolving or preventing one specific problem – but resolves problems in the context of making the whole body healthier. Inclusive Health is a unified way to look at health and aging. Every cell in your body is connected and if we can improve cellular health, we can make a dramatic change in our lives, our looks and even slow the aging process. I believe that with a little effort anyone can learn to live inclusively and feel as young as possible.

Dr. Murad translates his message on the science of aging and overall health in a very easy to understand way. Even though there is a lot of scientific data, it is easy to follow and a quick read. He provides the data all of us need to be healthy from the inside out. Obviously his years of research have given him the cutting edge on such dynamic findings. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

I spoke to the lady reading it sitting next to me(I can't remember her name but she was very nice) and she told me that I must read it! I purchased the book and read it on my flight back. I have already started to implement the new things I have learned (I am a culprit of Cultural stress!) and already am feeling great! I can't wait to spread the word to my friends and family. Thank you Dr. Murad for letting me know the little things I can do to live a healthier lifestyle!

The stunning third and final novel in Stieg Larsson’s internationally best-selling trilogy
Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority who have allowed the vulnerable, like herself, to suffer abuse and violence. And, on her own, she will plot revenge—against the man who tried to kill her, and the corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life.

Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2010 As the finale to Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest is not content to merely match the adrenaline-charged pace that made international bestsellers out of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played with Fire. Instead, it roars with an explosive storyline that blows the doors off the series and announces that the very best has been saved for last. A familiar evil lies in wait for Lisbeth Salander, but this time, she must do more than confront the miscreants of her past; she must destroy them. Much to her chagrin, survival requires her to place a great deal of faith in journalist Mikael Blomkvist and trust his judgment when the stakes are highest. To reveal more of the plot would be criminal, as Larsson's mastery of the unexpected is why millions have fallen hard for his work. But rest assured that the odds are again stacked, the challenges personal, and the action fraught with neck-snapping revelations in this snarling conclusion to a thrilling triad. This closing chapter to The Girl's pursuit of justice is guaranteed to leave readers both satisfied and saddened once the final page has been turned. --Dave Callanan

"A Fascinating Conclusion of the Trilogy" 2010-10-30
By Bojan Tunguz (Greencastle, IN USA)
This book is the final chapter in Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy. It is the culmination of the many interconnected incidents and affairs that have been explored by a duo of very unlikely protagonists - Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist and cofounder of the monthly magazine Millennium, and a brilliant yet very troubled young woman named Lisbeth Salander. "The Girl Who Kicked Hornets Nest" is a true sequel to the previous book in the series, "The Girl Who Played with Fire" as the action and the events presented here take off immediately at where the previous book left off. In fact, the two books should really be two volumes of the same book, and should be read as such. This is also by far the most ambitious and far-reaching book in the trilogy, as the depth and breadth of information on Swedish society, politics, and security services is truly impressive. However, this is a work of fiction and one should always have in mind that even though many of the events and characters described here are based on the real-life persons, Larsson has most certainly used a lot of creative freedom in fashioning his final masterpiece.

The book is high-paced and written with an incredible attention to every detail. Some of the technological devices and tricks, which seemed so advanced in the first few years of the new millennium, today feel quaint and dated. This is an interesting reminder that we live in a technologically high-paced world, and in a very short span of just five years a lot can and will change.

Just like in the previous two books in the trilogy, Larsson pays a lot of attention to various highly-complicated interpersonal relationships. This gives his character much more depth, but this fascination can at times feel a bit voyeuristic and self-indulgent. Nonetheless, this has not been the main focus of this book, and by its end there will be as many interpersonal loose ends as there are resolved relationships. This too gives the novel a lifelike quality, as in our own interactions with others there are very few, if any, relationships that are completely static and definitive.

"The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson" 2010-10-30
By scott89119 (Whittier, CA)
The sad, violent saga of Lisbeth Salander is brought to an ambiguous end here in the final book of Larsson's Millenium Trilogy. Thankfully it really is the best in the series, as it ties everything together from the previous books while having enough new characters and tension to make it a fine book on its own. No other book moves so quickly, goes as deeply into the politics of the author's beloved Sweden, has so much at risk, and has as much fun with the cat-and-house aspects of the story as this one. Salander, even though confined here through the great majority of the book, is as brilliantly crafty as she's ever been, and further cements her place as a truly interesting character in modern-day fiction. Everything from the characterization to the prolonged sense of danger to the wonderful atmosphere to the brilliant plotting and imagination of the book is first-rate, and goes far beyond what is found so often in dime-a-dozen thrillers these days. Highly recommended for all readers, though you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you skip to this one without reading the first two.

It's a tragedy Strauss is dead! He did a great job on this triology. The only complaint is that the protagonists "ladies man" persona wears thin and isn't a really relevant after book #1 ( we get it already, thank you)...
